Michal Mastej, EAA Chapter 115’s First Ray Scholar

By Kathy Lubitz, President, UPAC Michal first started coming to EAA Chapter 115 meetings with his dad, Piotr, while he was in high school. At the time, the chapter was rebuilding Jodel D-11 to use as a flying club aircraft. This particular aircraft was a barn find. The original builder had passed away, and the […] The post Michal Mastej, EAA Chapter 115’s First Ray Scholar first appeared on Hangar Flying.

Vintage Homebuilts — Part 2 of 3: Volmer VJ-22 Sportsman

By Mike Davenport, Langley, British Columbia This Volmer VJ-22 Sportsman is registered as CF-EBY, a nice touch considering the builder’s last name is Eby. This wooden amphibian was designed by Volmer Jensen in the late ‘60s and was built by Bill Eby over a period of five years. Bill first flew the VJ-22 in 1970, […] The post Vintage Homebuilts — Part 2 of 3: Volmer VJ-22 Sportsman first appeared on Hangar Flying.

Another quick round of questions and answers

It’s time for another Questions and Answers session. I started this series a few years back, when a reader asked if there was a way to pose aviation questions outside of specific posts. I’d love for this to become a more regular feature but for that I need more questions! The format is simple: post…

EAA’s Attic — Captain EAAgle Mascot

This piece originally ran in the September 2025 issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine. This mascot costume is that of Captain EAAgle, the EAA Aviation Foundation’s mascot during the 1980s. Commonly “on duty” at the museum or on the air show grounds, the captain would greet youths, pose for photos, and hand out coloring books […] The post EAA’s Attic — Captain EAAgle Mascot first appeared on Hangar Flying.

The Connections We Make

By Kristi Dunks, EAA Lifetime 689578, Vintage 732804 I probably come by it naturally given that my dad was a truckdriver for most of his life, but I must admit that the fun and connections I could find in driving thousands of miles to support my aviation dreams had not occurred to me. It all […] The post The Connections We Make first appeared on Hangar Flying.

I will be able to do that.’” Once upon a time (as all good stories begin) there was a young man who dreamed of becoming a pilot. Matthew Wolf loved aviation since he […] The post Matthew Wolf: Young Eagle to Ray Scholar to Commercial Pilot first appeared on Hangar Flying.

I Will Miss Southwest’s Open Seating (Trip Report)

I’ve hit the age where it’s time to start celebrating half centuries. This time, my wife and I headed up to Napa to go join a friend for his 50th. You’d think I would have flown Alaska to get my elite status, but… no. For the flights we would have taken to Santa Rosa, the...

Aquatic & Vintage Airways' Widgeons and Beaver

After Sea Bee Air ceased operating Grumman Widgeon and Goose aircraft on scheduled services in New Zealand during Easter 1989 there was one final operator that continued commercial operations using G. While this was the end of amphibious scheduled services it was not the end of commercial flying by amphibians. That honour goes to Aquatic & Vintage Airways Ltd and, as it was later renamed,
